Sound: Energetic, alternative-rock music with catchy melodies and lyrics.
Cashing in Karma is an alternative rock band from Lakewood, WA. It was birthed from the mind of singer-songwriter Jonny Barrett who spent years overcoming personal struggles with mental illness to pursue music.
At the end of 2016, Will Chi, Melvin Smith and Alex Thoburn put out Cashing in Karma’s first official release entitled, Earthbound. However, by the beginning of 2018 the line-up had disbanded and Barrett began the search for other musicians again. That’s when his old college friend, Marco Diez, stepped in bringing more creative diversity to the band.
Having recently moved from Detroit, MI to Seattle, WA earlier this year to assist in the fight against poverty with Habitat for Humanity, Dave Bugg soon found his way to Cashing In Karma as well. As a three-piece band, CIK's mission is to put on the best show possible, create music that people can dance and relate to, and empower anyone who has struggled with depression and mental illness.

"Earthbound is remarkably good, chock-full of infectious melodies and hefty rhythms. The tunes suffuse horizontal and vertical textures, as well as delicious instrumental differentiation that sets the music apart from the run-of-the-mill alt rock. In short, it’s lit. And Cashing In Karma has it going on." - Randy Radic (Contributor for Huffington Post)
Music Review: “Earthbound” – Cashing In Karma Dispenses High-Octane Alt-Rock
"Cashing in Karma seems like they would be the type of band that put on a good show. The music is upbeat, lively and something you could kind of shake your hips to while drinking a beer." - Ted Rogan (Divide and Conquer)
Cashing In Karma - Jigsaw Road Review
"...the band delivered an energetic set of edgy and danceable songs. Another young band seemingly destined for greater things locally, Cashing in Karma’s style is hard to describe. Strange? No. Mischievous? Maybe. Punchy? Definitely. Go see them live when you can, they’re memorable to say the least." - Gary Horn (Contributor for northwestmusicscene)
